MALARIA OUTBREAKS EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (MOEWS)

Malaria Outbreak Predictions Using Indigenous Knowledge and Technology

Malaria outbreaks remain a problem in Limpopo, Vhembe District. People die each year as a result of malaria infection. The challenge is not knowing that you are in a malaria high risk area. Vhembe currently has no technology that alerts people of a possible upcoming malaria outbreak.

Our malaria early warning system integrates indigenous and scientific malaria forecasting. A mobile application is used to capture indigenous indicators. When scientific and indigenous indicators have been analyzed and a malaria outbreak is detected, the outbreak information is communicated on the website and mobile application.
